Did you know that new research shows dry food is not better for our cat’s teeth than wet food? 🦷🐈‍⬛ A recent study compared the effect of dry versus wet food on oral health of cats, directly, and found no difference. The exception is special dental diets with the VOHC seal, which have undergone rigorous clinical trials to show they do truly clean the teeth. But as for normal dry versus wet? I recommend wet. 💧 Why? Cats are desert adapted and have a very low thirst drive, and wet food gives them more water in their diet, and may also be lower in carbohydrates, which cats do not need, or easily digest. 🌾 More on that later! I honestly cannot clip cats’ nails by myself, and hats off to those who manage. 🎩 The footage isn’t great, but the main thing is to ensure your cat is still, and cannot be injured, and then gently trim the hooked part of the nail, avoiding the pink ‘quick’ where the blood vessel is. Most of the time, licking of people and other animals is an affectionate behaviour, and it can also be a way our cats mark us, as their own territory. 😻 This is only a problem when there are multiple cats in a home and jealousy can arise. 😾 Excessive grooming, or grooming one particular body area causing fur loss or skin damage, can be a sign of anxiety and/or skin disease. Rarely, licking can be a sign of tummy problems. This means they can retreat to somewhere they feel safe, like under furniture 🛋️, somewhere up high, a box 📦, or in Mao’s case…a laundry basket. 🧺 We can close the blinds to block out the bright lights 💡. And play some music or white noise, or tv, to drown out the scary sudden noises 🎵. And if they do want to engage with us, offer a favourite treat, or toy, and ensure we stay calm, ourselves. ☺️. These dingoes are the incredible apex predator and native dog of Australia. They’ve lived with and adapted to Australian flora and fauna for thousands of years, likely coming to Australia, not with sea farers as originally thought, but without humans, via a land bridge around the last great flood. DNA studies and rock art suggest they have been in Australia up to 18,000 years ago! Whilst dingoes are very different, in their physiology, behaviour, reproduction, and genetically, to domestic dogs…we must still vaccinate them. Because they are sensitive to having reactions to certain types of vaccines) that are well tolerated in domestic dogs) we must be careful to select a specific and safe formulation. These beautiful animals are vaccinated against canine distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus. How much chocolate is too much? 🍫 For a dog (and cat!🐈‍⬛) it depends…on how dark the chocolate is, how big your pet is, and how much they ate. Hilda recently stole and ate 200gm of delicious Belgian truffles. 😡Because she’s so enormous, she was ok. I watched for signs of toxicity, including vomiting, diarrhoea🤮, trembling, agitation and distress, and a fast heart rate 💗. In severe cases they can develop seizures. It’s always safest to check with your vet, if you don’t know exactly what was eaten, or how much, or how much your dog weighs.
